Melting glaciers in the Alps are causing major environmental changes, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
Rising temperatures are accelerating glacier retreat, and the Stubai glacier in Austria is expected to disappear within 20 years. This rapid melting leads to increased rockslides, forcing the closure of mountain paths. The meltwater also carries fine sediment, which contains harmful substances like uranium and nickel, posing risks to water supplies. Thawing permafrost is destabilizing mountain slopes even more, making rockfalls more frequent and unpredictable. Lower valleys remain safe for tourists, but high-altitude areas are increasingly dangerous.
Glaciologist Andrea Fischer notes that, as the glaciers disappear, alpine landscapes will change from white to green, with plants colonizing higher elevations. This transition is a direct result of human-caused climate change, which has led to record-breaking summer temperatures across Europe.

Melting of Alpine glaciers is causing many changes, according to a new study.
Glaciers like the Stubai glacier in Austria will be gone in 20 years because of rising temperatures. The melting ice leads to more rockfalls, which makes high mountain paths unsafe. Water from the melting glaciers also carries small pieces of rock, including dangerous materials like uranium and nickel, which can harm water supplies. Permafrost, or frozen ground, is thawing, causing more rocks to fall. Lower areas are still safe for tourists, but it is risky at higher altitudes.
Glaciers are turning from white to green as plants are starting to grow in places where ice once covered the ground. This is all happening because of climate change humans caused.

Glaciers in the Alps are melting fast. It brings many problems.
In Austria, the Stubai glacier will be gone in 20 years. As the ice melts, more rocks fall. Some parts of the mountains are becoming dangerous. The water from the glaciers has small pieces of rock. There are some dangerous things like uranium. This can hurt the water which people use. The frozen ground, called permafrost, is also melting. Even more rocks fall. It is still safe for people in the lower parts of the mountains, but not at the top.
As the ice disappears, plants are starting to grow in new places. This is happening because of climate change.
